That opportunity is at the heart of a new partnership between the Space Systems Innovation Platform (SSIP) in Switzerland and UK-based Frontier Space Technologies. The collaboration combines two complementary capabilities: Frontier Space's developing orbital biotechnology infrastructure and SSIP's role in connecting industry, research institutions and international technology partners across Switzerland and beyond.
The ambition is clear: to make space-enabled biotechnology easier for terrestrial industry to access, evaluate, validate and ultimately use.
Microgravity Is Moving Closer to Industry
For decades, biological research in space was largely associated with government programmes, astronauts and experiments conducted aboard institutional space stations. That model is changing.
The emergence of autonomous laboratories, commercial launch services, miniaturised scientific hardware and increasingly capable return systems is creating a new infrastructure through which companies can conduct experiments in microgravity and bring data, samples and knowledge back to Earth.

But access to orbit alone will not drive industrial adoption. Frontier Space is developing SpaceLab, a modular and autonomous platform designed to enable biotechnology and life sciences research in microgravity. Its approach is intended to make orbital experimentation increasingly accessible to organisations that do not traditionally operate within the space sector.
SSIP approaches the opportunity from the opposite direction. Based at Technopark Luzern, the Space Systems Innovation Platform operates as an independent innovation ecosystem connecting industry, academia, research organisations and international technology providers across space, deep tech, microgravity and life sciences.

The partnership will explore opportunities to connect Swiss and international companies, research institutions and technology organisations with Frontier Space's microgravity capabilities. Potential areas of collaboration include pharmaceutical and biotechnology R&D, protein crystallisation, cellular research, biological manufacturing, advanced life sciences and joint industrial pilot programmes.
Projects can also be evaluated before any orbital campaign is considered — assessing the scientific hypothesis, technical feasibility, commercial potential and possible pathway towards industrialisation. This approach is designed to avoid treating space as an objective in itself. Instead, microgravity becomes another advanced technological capability available to researchers and industry when it can generate measurable value.

The success of the collaboration will ultimately not be measured by the number of organisations interested in microgravity. It will be measured by what comes out of it: experiments, validated technologies, industrial pilots, new intellectual property and commercial applications — and potentially new international research and industrial programmes connecting Switzerland with a rapidly developing commercial space infrastructure.
The wider question surrounding microgravity research is gradually evolving from "Can we do this in space?" to "Where can space create enough value to justify doing it?" For Switzerland's sophisticated pharmaceutical, biotechnology and advanced-technology ecosystem, that second question is considerably more important. SSIP and Frontier Space now intend to help answer it.
