01 / The Model

A district defined by capabilities — not boundaries.

One entry point. A distributed ecosystem. Multiple routes to implementation.

Space BioDistrict is not a government programme, public authority or exclusive representative of Switzerland. It is an independently coordinated ecosystem that brings the right organisations together around a specific industrial or scientific objective.

Every project remains subject to the technical, legal, commercial and institutional approval of the organisations involved.

Our role

  • 01Connect
  • 02Qualify
  • 03Structure
  • 04Convene
  • 05Accelerate

02 / The Anchors

Independent coordination. Credible local foundations.

Three distinct roles create a practical route from ecosystem access to scientific feasibility and implementation. Each institution remains autonomous.

04 / From Question to Pilot

A disciplined pathway to a credible first project.

Space is not the starting point. The starting point is a high-value problem with a defensible reason to investigate a non-terrestrial environment.

  1. 01

    Frame the challenge

Define the unmet need, business relevance, target outcome and why conventional approaches may be insufficient.

  2. 02

    Test the hypothesis

Assess scientific rationale, technical feasibility, platform constraints, intellectual property, regulation and preliminary economics.

  3. 03

    Build the consortium

Select the relevant scientific, engineering, platform, manufacturing, data and commercial contributors.

  4. 04

    Design the pilot

Translate the concept into requirements, work packages, governance, schedule, funding logic and decision gates.

  5. 05

    Validate and scale

Use evidence from the pilot to decide whether to stop, iterate, expand or build a repeatable commercial pathway.

05 / Independent by Design

No public mandate.
No false representation.
Real ecosystem access.

Space BioDistrict is developed and coordinated by SSIP as an independent Swiss initiative. Its value comes from relationships, technical understanding, convening capacity and the ability to structure collaboration — not from claiming authority over public institutions or the Swiss ecosystem.

What we are

  • An independent ecosystem and project orchestration layer
  • A neutral entry point for selected industrial and research challenges
  • A connector across science, engineering, infrastructure and markets
  • A platform for building consortia, pilots and long-term partnerships

What we are not

  • A government agency or investment-promotion authority
  • An official representative of Switzerland, Lucerne, HSLU, ESA or any public institution
  • An owner of third-party laboratories, infrastructure or technology
  • A guarantee of funding, platform access, approvals or project outcomes

06 / The Network Effect

Connected where each project needs to be connected.

The ecosystem is intentionally distributed. Partners participate according to the requirements of a project, under their own governance, commercial terms and approval processes.
